Encounters with beautiful objects that connect us through time.
About
Ancient bead jewellery.
These beads were made some 1,000 to 5,000 years ago and unearthed after many centuries.
They are made from materials including agate, rock crystal, glass and metal. A bead is an object pierced with a hole. Carefully made by hand, each ancient bead is also a piece of craftsmanship from its own time and place. When I see a bead that has survived beautifully while so many others have broken or chipped, I feel that it has been protected by nature, loved by people and carefully passed down.
I pair a single ancient bead with a cord that I make by splitting synthetic fibres into fine strands, twisting them and braiding them by hand. Beside the bead is a small piece of 18-karat gold. A hand-braided cord, an ancient bead and gold: these are the only materials I use.
Finished pieces are available at exhibitions, but visitors often choose their own bead and have it made into jewellery on the spot, according to their wishes and budget. I present over 1,000 beads from different periods and regions, including the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, ancient Rome and Persia, with a focus on finds from Western Asia and the Mediterranean. I hope you enjoy finding a single bead that is your own.

Profile
Masanori Okabe
Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1964.
I began making jewellery in my thirties. An encounter with ancient beads made more than 1,000 years ago led me to share their beauty with others.
I collect and present several thousand ancient beads, including Roman and Persian glass beads and stone beads from the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia and other parts of Western Asia.
My encounters with these beads also led me to ancient Near Eastern art and other antiques from Japan and abroad. I organise exhibitions at galleries throughout Japan, presenting Persian antiquities and works by Keisuke Serizawa, among other objects. I am based in Ukiha, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Ancient beads
When I look at a bead, my first thoughts are: how fragile, how resilient, how beautiful.
It has survived so much time, yet it seems as though it could break at any moment. Many others have cracked or chipped. This one remains beautiful, but that does not mean it is strong.
There is also strength within that fragility. I want to say to it, “You have done so well to come this far.” While others around it fell apart, it remained.
The beads I choose have a particular allure. It seems to come from within: the force of their continued existence and the connections through which people and nature have protected them. I feel that these things create their beauty.
I had not thought very deeply about why people in ancient times made beads, or what beads meant to them. I vaguely associated them with prayer, or with being small enough to keep close to the body.
Wearing one myself has taught me something: I can always be with a bead I love. I found the bead in my necklace about 25 years ago, and it has been with me ever since, while sleeping, bathing and working in the heat. It gives me a sense of reassurance, as though it were part of me.
I sometimes wonder whether people in ancient times felt the same. Beads may have been passed from parent to child, or represented status or wealth. Whatever their roles, they stayed close to people and witnessed many things with them.
Perhaps people spoke with their beads in much the same way 1,000 or 5,000 years ago, and even in prehistoric times.
