Period: Sasanian Persia, 5th–7th century CE (attributed)
Material: Hematite or black chalcedony (unidentified)
Imagery: Male portrait bust
The male bust is shown in profile, with a full beard and long, neatly arranged hair at the back of the head. He wears a diadem or crown-like headdress and a garment with a finely incised lattice pattern across the chest. A long, rod-like object appears in front of the face.
Bearded male busts, diadems and hair rendered with incised lines are features found on Sasanian seals. A seal in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art also depicts a bearded male bust with a diadem and hair represented by parallel lines.
