Neo-Babylonian Stamp Seal
Depicting a Scene of Worship Before Divine Symbols

Period: Neo-Babylonian (attributed); c. 7th–6th century BCE
Region: Mesopotamia (attributed)
Material: Blue chalcedony
Technique: Intaglio
Imagery: Figure facing symbols on a pedestal; crescent moon
Shape: Perforated seal with a rounded top
Dimensions: 18 × 12 × 29 mm
Weight: 12.2 g

A scene of worship directed toward divine symbols, carved into a grey-blue stone.

Comparisons with similar examples in museum collections indicate that the seal depicts a traditional motif: a priest praying before the symbols of the gods Marduk and Nabu.

A rectangular, altar-like pedestal is depicted, bearing the symbols of two deities: the horned dragon Mushkhush (associated with Marduk, the patron god of Babylon) and the spade and stylus (associated with Nabu, the god of scribes and son of Marduk). A crescent moon—the symbol of the god Sin—appears above the scene.
