Period: Late Ptolemaic–early Roman Imperial period, circa 1st century BCE–1st century CE
Region: Egypt
Material: Polychrome glass
Technique: Mosaic glass
Motifs: Flowers, buds, leaves and other plant forms
Weight: 12.5 g
Small fragments of a polychrome mosaic-glass decorative plaque made in Egypt around 2,000 years ago. Flowers, buds and leaves in vivid red, yellow, white and green appear against deep blue or blue-green glass that can look almost black.
Floral mosaic glass of this kind is associated with late Ptolemaic and early Roman Imperial Egypt, especially the 1st century BCE–1st century CE. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds several plaques and fragments with closely related floral designs.
Although the flowers may look painted, the decoration is made from glass. Different colours were combined to form flowers and leaves within canes, which were drawn out and sliced to reveal small patterned cross-sections. These sections and other glass fragments were assembled, heated and fused into a plaque, then polished.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Floral plaque, dated 100 BCE–100 CE and attributed to Egypt, combines coloured glass fragments into flowers, leaves and grape-like designs. The British Museum also holds an Egyptian mosaic-glass plaque of the Roman period, around the 1st century CE, decorated with small white flowers.
