Sassanid Persia
Ardashir I
1-Drachm Silver Coin
Period: Circa AD 224–240
Region: Sassanid Persia
Ruler: Ardashir I
Material: Silver
Denomination: 1 drachm
Type: Ardashir I, Type II group
Obverse: Bust of Ardashir I facing right, with a Pahlavi inscription
Reverse: Zoroastrian fire altar, with a Pahlavi inscription
Diameter: 2.6 cm
Thickness: Approximately 0.5 mm
Weight: 4.5 g
In the early third century AD, Ardashir I overthrew the Parthian kingdom and founded Sassanid Persia as its first king.
This silver drachm was issued during his reign.
The obverse depicts Ardashir I facing right. His distinctive crown and korymbos symbolise royal authority, while a royal title in Middle Persian, written in Pahlavi script, encircles the portrait.
The inscription means:
“The Mazda-worshipping divine Ardashir, King of Kings of Iran, descended from the gods.”
The reverse depicts a fire altar.
Ardashir I’s silver coins used this type, which gives prominence to the altar alone. The figures standing on either side of the altar, familiar from later Sassanid silver coins, do not yet appear.
The reverse inscription means “Fire of Ardashir.”
The fire is more than decoration. It is both a religious symbol of Zoroastrianism and an important image of the king’s legitimacy and authority. From Ardashir I’s reign onward, the fire altar became one of the defining motifs of Sassanid coinage.
Moving away from earlier Parthian expressions of kingship, Ardashir I combined a distinctive crown, royal title and fire altar to convey the new Sassanid conception of royal authority on his silver coins.
About 1,800 years ago, the beginning of a new dynasty and its ruler’s ideals of religion and kingship were engraved on a silver coin measuring just 2.6 cm in diameter.
