ガラスの表面には、黄色と濃青色を重ねた「眼」が立体的に貼り付けられています。

眼文を持つガラスビーズは、古代地中海世界に広く見られる意匠です。
この作品では、単なる平面的な文様ではなく、異なる色のガラスを幾層にも重ね、突出させることで強い存在感を持つ「眼」が表現されています。

長い埋蔵の時を経たガラスの表面には、白く銀化したような風化が広がり、その下から濃青や黄色の古代ガラスがのぞきます。

Dating to circa the 5th–3rd century BCE, this stratified eye bead belongs to the Phoenician cultural sphere, made in the Mediterranean world and carried to different regions.

Raised “eyes,” formed by layering yellow and dark blue glass, are applied to the surface.

Eye motifs are widely found on glass beads of the ancient Mediterranean world. In this piece, the eyes have a strong presence: rather than a flat pattern, layers of differently coloured glass project from the surface.

After a long period of burial, the surface bears whitish weathering resembling iridescence, beneath which the dark blue and yellow of the ancient glass can be seen.
