Antimachus I was a Greek king who ruled Bactria during the first half of the 2nd century BC.

A particularly striking feature of this silver coin is the kausia worn by the king. Originating in the Macedonian world, this hat—along with the royal diadem—defines his regal appearance. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Hellenistic culture, established after Alexander the Great, even in the distant land of Bactria.

The reverse side depicts Poseidon. Alongside the majestic figure holding a trident, the inscription identifies Antimachus as “THEOS” (God). A specimen held by the British Museum bears the same inscription and imagery.

A Greek king who lived in Bactria, Central Asia.
This single silver coin captures the Hellenistic world as it journeyed eastward and took on a new form.
