茶褐色の半透明な瑪瑙に、白と灰色の美しい縞模様が浮かび上がる眼文ビーズ。

天然の縞模様が眼を形作るように石を切り出し、研磨したと考えられる。中央には瞳を包み込むような白い文様が現れ、裏面には幾重にも重なるV字形の縞が見られる。

眼の意匠には、邪視を退け、身を守る魔除けの意味が込められてきた。

古代メソポタミアでは、約5000年前から眼を表現した石が知られ、天然の縞瑪瑙を利用したアイストーンは、神々への奉納品としても用いられた。
本作品は、約300年前のイランに由来する「サファヴィー・アゲート」と呼ばれる珠。古代オリエントから受け継がれてきた眼の護符の伝統を想起させる。

A translucent reddish-brown agate bead featuring striking natural bands of white and grey.

The stone appears to have been deliberately cut and polished to reveal an eye-like pattern. White bands surround the central eye motif, while the reverse displays a series of nested V-shaped bands.

The eye has long been regarded as a protective symbol against the evil eye.

In ancient Mesopotamia, eye-shaped stones were known nearly 5,000 years ago. Banded agate eye stones were also dedicated to deities as votive offerings.

Traditionally known as Safavid Agate and attributed to Iran approximately 300 years ago, this bead evokes the ancient Near Eastern tradition of protective eye amulets.
