Decoration / Motif: Eye motif utilizing the natural reddish-brown coloration of the stone

An elongated agate bead attributed to ancient Bactria.
Its most distinctive feature is the reddish-brown natural coloration set against a milky-white to grayish ground. The stone appears to have been carefully selected and oriented so that this contrasting area evokes an eye.
The elongated trapezoidal form is also characteristic of the bead. Eye motifs and the deliberate use of natural markings in stone have a long tradition across ancient West and South Asia, although the precise symbolic meaning of this particular bead cannot be determined.
The attribution to Bactria is tentative; its exact archaeological provenance is unknown.
