赤褐色と乳白色、灰色の細かな層が幾重にも重なる縞瑪瑙を用いた、中央が膨らみ、両端に向かって細くなる長形のビーズです。

正面では、濃い灰色の細長い部分を赤褐色と乳白色の層が囲み、眼を思わせる文様を形作っています。その周囲の縞は両端に向かって山形に折れ重なり、立体的な造形とともに強い幾何学的な印象を生み出しています。

この文様は後から施された装飾ではなく、縞瑪瑙そのものがもつ天然の層です。石の縞が美しく現れる部分を選び、天然の模様を意匠として生かすように切り出したと考えられます。

バクトリア地域の作例と推定していますが、正確な製作年代と出土地は不明です。

An elongated banded agate bead attributed to ancient Bactria, with a swollen centre and tapering ends.

Fine natural layers of reddish-brown, milky white and grey form a distinctive pattern. On the principal face, contrasting bands surround an elongated dark-grey area, creating an eye-like motif. Toward the ends, the layers fold into chevron-like formations that complement the bead’s sculpted contours.

The pattern is not an applied decoration but derives from the natural structure of the agate itself. The stone appears to have been carefully selected, oriented and shaped to bring its internal banding to the surface as a geometric design.

The attribution to Bactria and the proposed date remain tentative; its exact archaeological provenance is unknown.
